Outdoor Kitchens

People rarely get to spend time outdoors today. Most are tied down to desks due to professional commitments. While taking an occasional trip to the beach or the wilderness is a great idea, most people have the time to do that often. Utilising outdoor spaces like backyards productively is one way to get some sun. One of the most popular outdoor installations is the outdoor kitchen. At Award Kitchens, we always caution our clients to consider the decision carefully.

Outdoor Kitchen Cabinets

You need to plan an outdoor kitchen carefully because these structures are exposed to outdoor conditions. They endure heat, cold, wind, and rain. If the right materials aren’t chosen well, your outdoor kitchen won’t last very long. One of the most vulnerable aspects of this structure is the cabinets. That’s why you need to choose cabinets that would withstand the outside conditions. Here’s a list of commonly used materials:

  • Wood – When people think of kitchen cabinets, their mind immediately turns towards wood. Many clients wonder if wood is a suitable option for outdoor cabinets at all. The answer to this question is that yes, some types of types of wood can be used to build outdoor kitchen cabinets. Wood like IPE, cedar, and teak, etc, can be used. In fact, any wood that is used on decks can be used for cabinets.

However, even the most resilient wood species require some level of protective treatment. These cabinets need to be refinished and resealed often to maintain their integrity and their looks. Wood has a tendency to fade over time but that doesn’t really compromise its looks.

  • Polymer – This material is widely used for outdoor applications. It’s completely water resistant, won’t chip or damage due to changes in the weather, and requires little to no maintenance. Unlike other plastic-based products, polymer is resistant to fading as well and would continue to retain its looks for a long time. You can easily clean this material if it becomes dirty. However, unlike wood, these cabinets can’t be resurfaced and so when they start looking old, they’ll have to be replaced.
  • Stainless Steel – Stainless steel is a widely used outdoor kitchen material. The material is weatherproof and won’t rust easily.  It doesn’t corrode or fade. Steel tends to retain its looks for a very long time. As far as design is concerned, stainless steel offers a clean, sleek look that no other surface can replicate. This particular cabinet material is durable and once installed, it shouldn’t give you any problems for a long time. However, stainless steel is prone to becoming very hot in Australian summers and it is very reflective.
